Bio
Alex Constable (b. 1991) is a Los Angeles-based painter working predominantly from photographs. Some are his own, shot on a combination of film and iPhone, but most are gathered from antique stores, auction houses and his own family archive. He has long been fascinated by antiquities––often notable in the historical references in his paintings––an interest piqued as a teenager while visiting family in Europe.
From photos, he creates collages: miscellaneous combinations of figures, objects, landscapes and interiors which form the basis of his soft, atmospheric scenes. Before painting, Constable converts the collage into black and white, stripping away original tone and context, from which he discerns his own palette. His paintings distill ordinary moments, and items, into characterful vignettes.
